Thousands of Internet phone customers ignoring recent e-mails or letters about possible 911 problems could find their service shut off next week.
Vonage, Time Warner Cable and other companies providing increasingly popular phone service that uses the Internet or high-speed data networks are scrambling to reach, and receive a response from, all of their customers in the United States, including at least tens of thousands of consumers in the Kansas City area.
Any customers failing to say they know of limitations - such as not being able to call 911 if they lose power or Internet service - must be disconnected no later than Tuesday under Federal Communications Commission rules.
