Have heard them discussed but have yet to see any implemented. Supposedly helps navigate public IP addresses through NAT. Have you played with any Mark?

Yes, I've heard of them but don't know that much about them. Look here: https://www.voip-info.org/wiki-STUN

I'm playing with a service called Free World Dialup (FWD). It has a free softphone and a number of preconfigured hard phones you can order. Best I can tell, this is going to be a good place to test products and learn SIP in general, which is the reason I'm testing it out. The people who set this thing up answer questions on the forum they have linked to their softphone. I'm trying out a Cortelco single line SIP phone that has a great deal of web-based programming which includes the ability to use a STUN server. FWD has a STUN server. You might want to check this out and set up an account. You get a phone number that is 6 digits long. You can add individuals to your contact list and it will keep track of their presence. We sould see each other online and make video calls to each other. A lot like Comdial's softphone but free and easy to set up. I can't get the EP200 to work on it yet. https://www.freeworlddialup.com/index.php If you join, let me know. Here's a link to a post on their board in regard to setting up the Cortelco phone. https://www.freeworlddialup.com/community/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3614

I've also being playing around with FWD. I have a couple of Sipura ATA's. But, I'm not using the STUN sever. Just trying to see if they would be a low cost, simple way to tie two phone systems together. Voxilla has a few ATA configuration wizards that are really helpful. https://voxilla.com/ataconfig.php

Yes. I've played with them some. A STUN server allows a SIP client to determine what type of NAT it is behind & also helps to determine how to route UDP traffic to the client from the outside world. However STUN does not work with all types of NAT.

aweaver- I think that is the key point. There is almost a blanket statement upfront that it won't work with all types of NAT. I don't know if there is a list of approved/disapproved types. If anyone finds such a list please enlighten all of us.
