Hey guys,

I'll be honest right off the bat and let everyone know that I don't know much at all about telco system, but I do know a fair bit about networks, and Cisco networks in particular. I'm having a problem with a Spectralink/Nortel VoIP system that another vendor installed for a customer of ours, in which I installed the wireless system. The wireless network appears to work just fine; I can configure my laptop to be on the same SSID as the phones and it has no issues. I can ping another test laptop on this same WLAN and it responds normally, with just a few ms response times. However, when I try and ping a Specralink/Nortel phone the response times are horrible, like averaging over 1600ms. I can see why they are having issues, and wonder how they make any calls at all. If we reboot one of the two Nortel gateways the phone reboots, and acts normally during bootup, replying with a 1-2ms response time until it loads the code an connects to the gateway. Once connected it has response times between 20-130ms, with an average around 50ms. Then 120 seconds after it boots up it shoots right up to 1600ms again. This certainly isn't normal behavior for a regular IP device. Is this normal for Spectralink/Nortel wireless VoIP phones?

Thanks,

Fred Reimer

I talked with one of my other engineers, and he said that it is likely the ping response times are due to the phonesets going in sleep mode, and having lackluster response to anything other than control traffic to accept an incoming call, or a call initiated on the unit. I'll do some tests and find out. Meanwhile, does anyone know of any production VoIP wireless networks in which the units use WPA2 PSK, as opposed to a static WEP key? Any roaming issues with WPA pre-shared keys on Nortel/Spectralink units? I was told that there were issues that Nortel identified in one implementation and a change from WPA2 PSK to static WEP resolved the roaming issues they were having.

Thanks,

Fred

Are the wireless sets on a seperate VLAN ? If so are they downloading the correct bootfile from their local DHCP Server ? If you reset one of the spectrlink phones can you see in the display what options they are loading and what VLAN they are connecting to ? Also insure thier local dhcp server is set to voice priorty 6 . Also insure one of your DHCP options has Nortel IP Phone or something close in the settings and that option 66&67 are enabled .

Fred..I have to ask- Does the Spectralink handset work? Does it not work? Are you concerned about the ping response? What are the issues that they are having?? We have several sites using Spectralink with no issues.
