I have a Nortel MICS with four Vonage lines. When I'm on a line and call a company where I get transferred, the call often gets dropped. Calling Verizon, it happens all the time. But it happens consistently on systems where the call is transferred between extensions or departments. I hooked-up an analog phone to the adapter (A linksys adapter) and it still happens. Any suggestions?

That pretty much sums it up. I had a customer on a voip / pri, from cox. 95% of the time the voice quality was there. Only problem(s); faxing and modems. They recently went back to hardwire with another provider. Fortunately, the whole thing was just beta, and they volunteered to be the pigs; free of charge of course.

When people hear how awesome VoIP is, they generally hop right on it without looking into it.

Local, VoIP is amazing and full of features.

When you start getting your phone lines over the internet, well, this is where we run into problems.

I say for the time being, it is better to use POTS for your incoming lines and just use VoIP locally (on a seperate network)

We are moving our office to a bigger place and we need to increase our phone system. We want to setup a 4 X 8 solution, that can grow in the future, but we have got several quotes and prices including cabling are among 5000 and 6000 dollars. We are wondering if is there any solution working with VOIP or something that can be cheaper than that?

VOIP is basically divided into tow areas:1. VOIP lines, and 2. VOIP telephone systems.

VOIP lines MAY save you money. HOWEVER, if you do use them please please please read about it first. There are still major issues. A major factor that can be overlooked is your internet speed. While there is a minimum speed that the carriers like Vonage will tell you, I would recomend that you add 1/2 that speed again to get decent quality. It is my experience that VOIP lines for small applications are more costly in the end. How often does your internet go down? If it does you WILL loose phone service too.

A VOIP phone system will more than likely only cost more than a digital system of the same size. Of course there will be exceptions, but remember, you really do get what you pay for, especially when it comes to technology like VOIP.

The best way to "go cheaper" would be to lease a system or buy a used system. A used system will fit the bill and be substantially cheaper, you can upgrade it down the road, or replace it with something bigger. Leaseing is another good option, it lets you get something new and makes it affordable. Check out both options.
