We are a small company with technicians out in the field, and we would like a solution for our technicians to call in and leave the office messages on one central mailbox. This is basically voicemail, but we only need one box. What is the best option? Is there any type of digital recorder we could place on an extension? Or do we need a full voicemail solution?

We are currently running on an IDS 42 system with Executone 32 phones.

Answering Machine?

Any kind of Intergrated Voice mail system on an IDS is a Ton of $$$ and You would also need the VMS Option turned on...

Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't even have a problem with putting an answering machine in, but we need this accessible during the day through the autoattendant, when our phone system is switched on. Could I perhaps set up an extension and flag it as analog in the system to allow an answering machine there?

Thru the ' auto-attendant ' Are You using Executones AA? A Digital Recorder (DVA)Digital Voice Announcer?

You would need to add an OPXI to convert a Digital ext to an Analog ext to use with the Answering machine. It can be done....

Would there be a way to program a system speed dial extension accessible through the main screen? We could have them connect to another line (like a cell phone with voicemail) that's not in use during the day.

Yes, You could have that set-up, for example, dial into the system, hear the AA, dial an ext(setup a Station speed key of 839) and have it forward off-site to any number You want.

The only problem with that is, it will tie up 2 lines everytime somebody dials that ext and the Volume will most likley be pretty crappy.

Getting back to your original question, Maybe, you could get ' bell answer call '(like Voicemail/answering machine)from the Phone Co. on just 1 of Your lines. Then when somebody leaves a message, You would hear stutter dial tone....

again, just my 2 cents...

I really think that your best bet is going to be to set up an analog port and hook up an answerring machine.

Yes I agree the best option is to get an OPXI and an answering machine. No tying up of multiple lines that comes with the forwarding option.
