Kumba - you really got me doing some research. I think my strategy for now will be to investigate sidetone gain and reducing it. Apparently the Aastra default settings are pretty bad and sidetone is a common problem Also, I know that there are better headsets out there. I know the Meridian headsets have some good echo cancellation built in. I assume they are compatible with the Aastra headsets? It would be a very cheap way of fixing at least part of this problem.

Sidetone, there we go. I knew I was close but all I could come up with was side-talk. So much for my terminology.

I didn't know the problem was just headset related. If you don't hear it when you pick up the handset, then obviously the issue with echo is the headset. If you get it regardless, then it's the phone sitting on your desk.

For your own piece of mind, I would try ordering a Snom 300, plugging it in, registering it to the server, and seeing if all the problems go away. They are a cheap entry-level IP phone that is sub $100 and relatively easy to configure. Would make for a simple diagnostic phone of sorts.

The other option is to take a soft-phone on your computer (Zoiper or X-Lite), plug in a USB Headset, and register to the server. See if that gives you the audio issues. Of course the customer might see the computer and get lost from seeing the forrest for the tree's, but you would know what it means.

I believe I have an extra SNOM laying around my office you can borrow if you want. If interested, just shoot me a PM.
