I'm new the the FTTH market and I was looking for a tool to strip the outer jacket. We work with single mode flat drop fiber and wanted to know if there is an easier way to strip the jacket, we currently use a utility knife which kinda dangerouse with the fiber glass strength members sticking out, not to mention the sharp knife.
Thanks for your advice!

Howdy, Zeusdog.....
Now then, what brand of cable are we dealing with?
Is it steel strength members or ayrimid? Kevlar? Using a sharp knife makes me think ayrimid.
Try checking your local suppliers of Corning products for a fiber "ringer" and "snap pliers" for the type of fiber you are dealing with. There are several types of splitters, strippers, and cutters out there, as many as there are types and manufacturers of of OSP fiber.
Good Luck.

Hey Ken,
I run into many types, OFS as well as Corning. Most have fiber glass strength members and gel fill loose-tube fiber. This is mostly flat SST drop to homes. Thanks for any advise you can give me.

I did a "soup-to-nuts" installation with Verizon - a new FIOS customer and they started the strip by using a utility knife on the flat single mode 1-strand fiber. Then he used the cut piece like a zip cord.

I am a big fan of a stanley knife with a small hook blade in it, very fast and efficient, just be careful. Practice on some off-cuts and get proficient with it before you hit the "money" cabling.
Don't get all sweaty and lean on the block...it tingles a bit!
