Another good addition. We little guys aren't always brand specific and need all the help we can get when needing repairs. Thanx, KLD ![[Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]](https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/wink.gif)

Hiya everyone, I just accepted a job that is a different from my normal scope of knowing. I normally fix and hook up computer equipment, but this job requires the use of Toner and Butt set to establish correct IP and cabling communication through a modem I will install. I never used a Toner or Buttset before? Do I need both, I bought a Toner already?

neither tool will confirm a correct IP , I'm going to guess you want to confirm the proper tel number and the butt set will help you do that and the toner can help ...

Welcome aboard rs!
This topic is 5 years old. Starting a brand new one rather than piggy-backing on to a very old one is the preferred way to go.
A toner & probe are 2 of the basic tools used by cable installers. A Sharpie and cable markers can also be used.
While you can use a toner & probe to locate a particular cable within a bundle, you will need to use a Certifier to determine if cable has been properly run & terminated. Also, as Skip mentioned, none of the items I listed above will help with IP issues.
