Greetings! I recently aquired a Western Electric telephone model 2500. It works great except it doesn't ring!
When I opened it up I notice a black wire and red wire coming from the ringer that were not attached to any connections.
I've found schemtics, but to be honest they're Greek to me!
So any help on where to attach these wires would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to here this thing ring.

common to find one with the ringer disconnected , back in the regulated days you paid per phone and one trick the telco used was to call and look at the load on the line to see how many ringers there where

If there was no ringer they didnt know the phone was thare and couldnt charge you the extra .25 per month

if you set me down in front of the phone I could probably get it hooked up quick , its been long enough I cant do it from memeory though .

somebody will probably be along who's memeory is a little better , if not I'll dig out a 2500 and look .

The Black wire connects to L1, the Red wire to L2, the Grey/Red to A, and the Grey to K (yes, on schematics they call them Grey vs. Slate).

How to GO, TTT.

Made the old man think for a minute, there. Some of the newer ones had an on-board cap --- only red and black. And as you said L1 & L2.

Hey, Ken, there wasn't an-board capacitor on the most recent ringers, they just went with a single coil between red and black leads instead of two separate coils with a capacitor connected between them. Four-wire coils had one winding between black and slate and the second winding was between red and slate/red.

Even the two-wire coils need a capacitor to provide DC isolation from the CO line. They were wired using the same terminals A and K, just a short jumper went from A to L2. Black from the ringer went to L1 and the red went to terminal K.

All manufacturers had the same products (WECO, ITT, Stromberg-Carlson/Comdial and Automatic Electric/GTE). With the exception of AE/GTE, wire colors and standards within the sets was uniform.

Since party line ringing was still in use when these sets were in production, the capacitor was always a separate item. The combination of different coil windings and capacitors determined which freqency the ringer responded to on a party line call. Does anyone remember all of that tip party and ring party stuff in the BSP's?
