I have a customer with cingular cell service. They have a big warehouse that they wander around in and don't get very good coverage. They asked me to see if there are any ways to boost the signal in the warehouse, as cingular doesn't care what happens there. (according to the manager who called to ask) Is there an antenna or something that could be installed. Any ideas would be great.

While doing wiring for my new office, I came across something in the ceiling that we could only assume was a Nextel repeater. It was fed by a heavy coax that we can trace all the way to the back of the building and then down to our neighbors. Have no idea if it's still active, or exactly what it does. If it IS what we think it is, then I'm sure there must be repeaters for other services, how to get it though, I don't know.

When we had Nextels, we had a hardwired base station on the dispatcher's desk. They ran 1/2" rigid coax into our warehouse and then up to the roof where they placed an antenna. They had to do this because there was no Nextel signal inside our building (or any building in my opinion).

Shawn, I found some interesting stuff on e-bay one time when trying to find one for a friend. Just search "cellular repeater" and there are several people selling some pretty advanced equipiment for this.

Talk to your local two-way radio dealer, he may have some ideas. Also talk to the cellular carriers, as any repeater installation that affects their systems must be approved by them. This includes in-building boosters. I don't know what the FCC licensing issues are, these may fall under the cellular company's license.

We've installed a handfull of cell repeaters and they work great and are relativly affordable. It will consist of one outside directional antenna, and either one or two indoor ceiling mount omnis. We have had alot of luck with them. They install very easy and you can even get them to go in your car/truck. When I get to the office in the AM, I'll pm you the information of the guy you need to talk to. Quite a few of the carriers install these at their retail stores. It just doesn't look good to try and sell a phone that is only getting one bar of reception inside the mall.

I'll just post it here tomorrow, it's no trade secret. I'm no expert in the stuff, it's one of those cases of it's not "What you know"... All I've had to to do is tell this guy what I was wanting to accomplish and he qouted me the right stuff. They make different models depending on the carrier your customer has, some will do more than one carrier. Install was a near no brainer. Might be a good source of revenue for a lot of guys here.
