Here's a good one:

I removed an old TIE system today from a friend's parents apartment. They're in their 80's and the phones just aren't working as well as they used to.

The TIE was replaced with 6 panasonic 4 line display phones.
There were a few wiring issues, some shorts here and there.

In the end all of the tones worked out, but there's no caller id.
I called Verizon and put in a ticket, a guy at the switch called me back and said there's a solid 22vdc on tip and ring of both lines.
He said it looks like a short in the switch, that's why there's no info being sent.

I've never heard this before.
To me, a short is a short.

I'll admit the possibility of something crazy like this happening, especially since the TIE system was installed using ONE 25 PAIR CABLE THAT WAS SNAKED ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH THE HOUSE AND SPLIT OPEN AT THE JACK LOCATIONS TO GRAB THE APPROPRIATE PAIRS...

But come on, really?
Can this happen?

Are the Panasonic telephones individual corded units or is it a base unit with expansion wireless handsets?

The reason I ask is if they are individual corded units and if the total REN exceeds a certain amount, then anything is possible.

1 way to test Verizon's conclusion would be to connect a known working single line telephone to the Verizon demarc for each telephone line and see if the information is being delivered.

If Caller ID info shows up on all lines, then something is amiss with the Panasonic phone(s).

I was actually planning on doing just that. Going back in the morning and testing from the demarc. The "customer" was up my a** this evening, so I just called it a night. They have dial tone, and have survived into their late 80's without CID, so one more night isn't going to kill anyone.

These are four line, individually corded units.

I don't know about the caller ID issue, but they will probably experience cross talk.

That's what I thought, too. But there is NONE. Each line is clean, I tested every which way.

Going back today with the sidekick and some anger.

have you hooked a known good caller id box up to the lines ?

tried the panasonic phones at another location ?

how about hooking one panasonic up to the demark direct bypassing the 25 pair

(BTW , you are waiting for at least two rings before answering )
