I am considering having a few cameras mounted on the outside of the house. Primarily due to the fact of recent burglaries in our area.

Will you guys comment on the different options available and what you think works well in a residential situation? A few details-
The street is only about 50' from the front of the house.
I would want recordings of some sort.
I plan on having a home server at some point, if that helps.
I want night/day cams.

Comments are appreciated, and if you can point me to some other sites on the net to check out that is good as well.

Thanks.

This is a really broad question. For a residence
you may want to look at Speco and Nuvico. Also check out sites like this they have some decent stuff and should be able to point you in the right direction

Cameras are a good deterrent for crime, and can be used after a break in. Since you are worried about it, you should also consider an alarm system… Most criminals want to get in and out with out detection, a loud siren or two gets them running when they violate the perimeter.

Thanks for the comments.

I know it is a broad question, but I am hoping my posting here will help narrow my search.

I am looking into more motion sensor lights as well.

Motion lights are a good deterrent, and Jimmy also brings up a good point, look into a decent alarm system. One that contacts the windows and doors as well as provides glass break sensors and motion detector. the window/door contacts and glass break sensors will set the alarm off BEFORE a thief can enter. The motions are great as a back up but require someone to be in your home already to work.

As far as the cameras a simple system like this will work for an average sized house.

Hope this gives you few ideas

I would try to use network cameras with a PC to record the video.

Anyway it worth to check the camera field of view/lens focal length with tool using CCTV design tool or a free online cctv lens calculator .

In many cases you can use variofocal lens in case if you are not sure about the camera installation parameters, but anyway you need to check if the lens FL range (like from 3 to 8 mm for AXIS 211) is sufficient for your goals.
