I finally got the right speakerphone for my office:



The voice quality is better than any speakerphone I've ever used. Comments from the other end indicate they couldn't tell I was even on speakerphone.

Yet, a question. I've got 2 WE 2565HK's. One it works with, one not. It also does not work with whatever the equivelant ITT deskset is.

Basically it acts like there isn't even a deskset connected with the ITT and the other 2565.

Is there something special that must be done inside the deskset to get it to work with the speakerphone (i.e a lead terminated in a different place, etc)?

What kind of speakerphone is it?

WE 3A? 4A? NT Companion? Other???

I was hoping maybe the picture would suffice for the type of speakerphone, guess that was incorrect.

It's a 4A. Matt, you'll need to look at the voilet/green through violet/slate pairs in the set that works and confirm that these pairs have not been disconnected inside the non-working sets. This frequently gets done when two 2565's are used with a bridging adapter.

Also, look at the dials on the non-working sets. If they don't have a green/white, violet and orange wire, then they are not equipped to support a 4A. You will need to replace the dials with the proper ones. There's a good chance that the phones got refurbished and someone put in standard dials.

I'll bet the ITT is not a 2565, but a 2564, which does not have the violet leads.

No, ITT made a directly-compatible 2565 set for this. Precision Components made an identical 4A speakerphone set as well. Electrically identical.

If I recall a lot of the 2565 sets were sent out with all of the violet pairs isolated. It was a rare occasion that they were not and this would always throw the new guys for a loop.

I'd be willing to bet, oh... 50cents, that PC made W-E's. W-E didn't make the low production stuff much. They were also AT&T/BOC purchasing arm. Those 35 pound '700' answering machines that the BOC's put in were made by Code-A-Phone, even though they usually had either Telco or AT&T logo on them. John C. (Not Garand)

They were manufactured by Western Electric's Omaha plant. PCI was granted a license to copy the design after seven years. That's why their clone started showing up in the early 1980's.

Code-a-Phone was definitely NOT made by Western Electric.

I've never seen a 2565 set without all pairs intact, but then, I have only seen them on this side of the country, so I can't say for sure that isolating the violet pairs wasn't commonplace. I do know that the violet/blue and violet/orange were insulated and stored from the factory though.
