Ed -

I took the voltage reading with a very expensive digital Amprobe (Will do DC Amps - got to have it for backup battery jobs).

I wonder if my old Analog 310 Tripplett would do a better job reading ringing current.

Sam, it's simple: WE 400D cards will NOT ring up on metallic ringing. Switch to SanBars.

400G and 400H are crapola.

I had the same problem running my demo 1A2 system off an Adtran channel bank tied to my C*NET system. Got a couple of SB-4000's from Ed and now I get incoming calls.

Arthur -

Actually the first failing card WAS a Sanbar 4000F! I'm down to one line (and an ICM and H/F talkback to the front door) and that line is on an ITT 400E. I've changed the ringers to Line Bells and everything rings, flashes and winks the way it's supposed to.

Someone gave me a GE, CID, 2 line KSU-less speaker phone. I'm going to see if I can get the 2nd line to work on the ICM (with an external buzzer). If that flies, I might see about finally dropping the 1A2 system, in total or in part.

The whole business was very strange, First everything worked, then it didn't, then only the lamps worked. I'm still not sure what the heck was going on.

FIOS is pretty slick. Though of course, only time will tell.

One thing I'm sure of - what ever equipment I put in will never last the 30 years the 1A2 did.

Sam, the San/Bar cards had a bridged (metallic) or grounded ringing strapping option. Chances are that your's wasn't strapped for bridged ringing. 400H2's don't require any strapping options for this.

This whole thing really does stem from the fact that the power in the ONT isn't grounded, so there's no point of reference. If the installer had strapped it properly, you wouldn't have noticed a thing.

Makes sense. I've got the first FIOS installation in the neighborhood. I'd forgive the guy if he never ran into anything like this before.

In the mean time, the wife is becoming very fond of CID, so the future of the system is iffy.

Matt -

I'll probably still keep the KSU for the Intercom and the door box. Lines? I'm not sure yet.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but on the subject of caller ID... I don't have it anymore; which is to say it's present but I have no equipment to display it.

I don't miss it a bit, I found out I enjoy not knowing who is calling. Plus, rather than just let the phone ring, and having continued unwanted callbacks - if it's someone I don't want to talk to, or talk with right at that moment, they find out about it pretty quickly (I was a terrible call screener).

Next to go: call waiting. I hate being interrupted while I'm being interrupted.

It's funny, but the older I get, the more I dislike technology. Which isn't really a very good thing, seeing as how I depend on it for my income.

Someone showed me their iPhone the other day, I have to admit it was super cool.

Do I want one?

Absolutely not.

You're not the only one. I think it's because we can form intelligent opinions as to it's usefulness because we have actual knowledge of what it was like without it.

Gotta agree with John... you nailed it. I never thought about it like that. Fortunately, 1A2 systems don't fall under my definition of technology I dislike. VoIP is another matter.

OK, but having a 1A2 with no lines disqualifies you from the "has a working 1A2 system" club. You realize if you do that then I move 1 step up in the nationwide contest to have the last residential 1A2 system?

Phyliss Diller recently bailed, ya know. So if you go, thats 2 spots I move up in as many weeks.

Matt, is the step-up REALLY a good thing? Once Sam decommissions his, he'll probably lose all interest in assisting you and others with the wild and wooley world of the super flexible, though somewhat archaeic (Wow, there's a word. Although probably mis-spelled), bullet-proof, 1A2 system. frown John C.
