Yeah, Emergency is a good show for seeing "real" phone systems in use. Rampart makes good use of their system!
I was wondering about that speakerphone as well, Jeff. I just watched that episode recently and was intrigued by its design.

My 2 Cents:
As was stated in the link, it required a 55(A I think) control unit and a 565 version Key set to make it work. I even told sales how to use the little switch hook phone (a 220 I think) so the visible foot print was tiny. I would work with other non-key sets as well.
I always thought the 4A speaker phone was the best, or at least better than the 3.
However, they all sound better to the party on the other end if you keep the receiver part close to your mouth, rather than 1/2 way across the room.
