Check out this photo. Here's the listing on the Bay thing: LINK What is this used for? What benefits are there to an adapter that will specifically "branch the last 5 (violet) pairs?" You guys seem to know stuff.

The 149B was just a general-purpose adapter that was used at the wall outlet between the station cable and the 6-button set in order to "steal" unused pairs. Most of the pairs available were the violet ones, however a couple of the yellow pairs were also available. Of course, the A1 lead was there as well.
These pairs were stolen for a variety of reasons, such as extra devices nearby like buzzers, ringers, faxes, modems, etc.
There was a similar adapter that was specifically designed for the 4A speakerphone to allow it to plug directly in in conjunction with a 2565 set, but it had a center, or third 25 pair connector designed to accept the transmitter, loudspeaker and power plugs. It was known as the 82B adapter and looked almost the same as the 149B.

I would like to ask justbill how one would use the speakerphone with this 149B adapter. And is justbill referring to just the 4A speakerphone or the 3 as well or maybe a 107, 694, or 760 speaker? I thought as EV mentioned above, you really needed the 82 to hook up the 4A as they all had the mini Amphenol connectors for the third connector slot.

What about the PC-4B Speaker Phone, no mini amphenol connectors on that.

I don't have access to the 1A2 manuals, but I'm pretty sure the 149 could be used for the speaker phones. If I'm wrong Ed will correct me.

Yes, there is an adapter for the 4A (the part number is 223A) that came with a spade-tipped cord that could either we wired into the telephone set OR connected to a 2565 via the 149B block. It is kind of a roundabout way, but it certainly can be done. Finding a 223A adapter is about as easy as finding the fountain of youth. As Arthur would say, they are made out of "unobtainium".

Bill -
I'll try to brave the dreaded basement later and look for the manuals.
I used them on my 1A2 system at home to - as Ed said - "steal" pairs. Before the advent of the 568 standard I pulled pairs off the 25 pair station cables to use with serial line drivers. These guys let me cleanly "network" my home PCs.

Yes, but they sounded good!
