Tie? Ah yes. The 919B, the 2050, etc. How could I forget? I cut my teeth on those puppies.

I thought about TIE too, Dave. Remember how the phones' speakers would give a click before they rang due to the internal amp getting fired up? How about that annoying interrupter card that used relays that was loud as hell? We won't even discuss that matrix intercom assignment wiring, OK?
The only reason that I didn't mention it was that it didn't follow the traditional 1A2 wiring. It was more similar to ComKey 718 and up, with centralized grounds and power.

If you're going to mention TIE then I guess you have to list Shimcom, NEC (Patrician), Iwatsu(1) and all the rest of those.

I seem to recall replacing an OOLLDD Intertel that was 1A2-like, although the cut down was way different, and I managed to knock out several phones without doing anything but putting up the new KSU blocks and cabling for a TIE Ultracom 1236. To quote ?, "I swear I didn't touch a thing."

I saw it mentioned above, 10A1 and 10A2. That was Automatic Electrics, also there was the 17A1 for a brief period before the skinny wire systems. That also was A.E. Which is what GTE put in I did work on a W.E. 1A, which had no interupter.

It was more designed for the new Comdial sets. I always thought those old Comdial 1A2 phones looked quite nice. Much nicer than the rest of the pack.

The Comdial sets were 3564's (MaxPlus), and there was a version made with a ten-position rotary switch in the base that allowed the intercom code to be selected. I want to say that it had a -930 suffix on the part number for the phone. This switch just chose the half-pair with reference to lamp ground for the buzzer. While I only saw them in use on the San/Bar DIY 1A2 systems, I'd imagine that they were usable on the Viking unit as well.
Since these sets were functionally 2464 sets, the full compliment of violet pairs were available to play the split-pair routine. These systems were literally designed to permit the 'installer' to use bridging adapters/double-ended cables to complete the installation. They sold like crazy around here through a chain called "Public Phone Stores" and we landed a lot of business through our relationship with them as a sub-contractor.
San/Bar's 6610/6620 series of KSU's offered a lot of options when using these sets.
Any pseudo 1A2 'KSU' was likely designed this way, since they typically had a single Amphenol-type connector for the system output. I seriously doubt that these manufacturers expected that the end-users were actually capable of placing cross-connects. The rotary switch was quite miraculous in a way.
Comdial was cutting-edge at the time; moving forward and keeping up with industry trends. They wanted to do it, but they missed the boat on the fast pace of technology; holding onto the current standard.
Kind of like MAC addresses with today's IP phones?
