There is a group of TTY enthusiasts that are creating a TELEX like system via the internet. When they get it working, one will dial a code on a telephone type interupter dial and be able to send TTY messages to the receipiant. It is amazingly similar to C*NET.
Right now, I use a software tool on an old Windows 2000 notebook to receive AP headline news feeds (not with the unit pictured. I do not want a TTY hammering away in an area with little ones (grandkids) who might get fingers injured in the mechanicals). There is a 20mA power supply, a Blackbox TTL to 20mA converter and switchboard (doesn't look like a telephone switchboard) with a mA meter and a bank of rheostats to keep the current loop tame. Too much current will destroy the selector magnets in a TTY. (re-winding is a pain in the butt...)
Best,
Joe
Real comms took 200lb teletypes, hand keys, sounders, operators and cranked phones!
