Western Electric didn't put the color code suffix on the bottom of the phones. Only ITT and S/C did. This was largely due to the fact that the bases and housings were often kept on Bell's trucks as separate items. The installer would assemble the desired telephone set on-site.

If your phone has a 50 conductor cord, then you have a 2565. If it is 18 conductors, then it is a 2564.

Sometimes when the color was changed in the field the XX I'd was removed.

Ed's right again. Color codes were removed, but not on the WECO sets. My bad. Comes from not working for Mother.

Thanks Guys! I'm so used to seeing the full code on the bottom... I had several AE87A sets that were fully coded, so I guess I was expecting the same from WE. John
