I heard that the Protoge has been discontinued but will be supported for several years. Has anyone else heard the same thing?

Sprint decided to get out of the CPE side of the business. They transferred their remaining Protege inventory and their relationship with the source manufacturer to King Technologies as of mid-April 2006.

see https://www.kingtechnologies.com/new_sprint_protege.html

For the moment, both King and the Sprint Teleservices group provide technical support and repair services. The web link above may help with who does what....

No, I don't work for King, just have lots of Protege systems to support.....
