The setup of Protege RMPs to run on XP is a pain, however we do have two shop laptops and two desktops successfully running (for at least two years) all of our switch programming software.
Those units connect with the RMP using serial cable (9-pin COM port) and remote modem access. We've used the DOS window (I think you refer to it as the DOSBOX) and we have rebooted the machine into DOS as well (when necessary).
Does the program actually run but locks up or does it crash on you just after starting it?
If the program does run, do you have problems making a connection (like you cannot access the com port)?
Will do what I can to help you.

If you google dosbox you will see the program is available for free. Gamers use it to play older games that need dos. I have it working to the point that the rmp comes up and fuctions but I cant get it to connect. In the faqs on the site they tell you what to do to connect serial port but I not very good at writing strings and that is my problem, I have to play around with different formats and really dont know what the hell I am doing. I have been told that once you get it working it tends to keep working. So if I could solve the set up problem I think I might be in and not have to carry two laptops anymore.

I believe all you have to do is click on the program, select properties, select compatibility and run it as windows 95. That works on all of our laptops. You may run into a problem if you are using a USB adapter to serial cable.
