"7. Infrastructure Work in War Zones"

We were offered a chance to do some cabling over seas about a year ago. 12 hours a day, 7 days a week @ $80 an hour = some serious money. We passed though, we all thought that it was best to be able to come home and spend our money.

Watch these guys climb to the top of a 1768' transmission tower. I've seen it before, but it always scares the heck out of me!

I did this kind of work for 3 years. I had spent 10 years behind a desk as a manager and was going back to craft (another story). I had been out of work and was anxious (and hungry!) to get back working. I got sent out to an electrical contractor who needed a specialist on T carrier. They needed the specialist because they were doing Microwave communications sites. Along with setting up T-1s I got to install and maintain the hardware.

It was a 'puckering' experience, but eventually you can get used to it. I was too ashamed to say that I was scared so I just did it and tried not to look down. I worked on the top of the MTV building (54 stories plus tower), Pan Am/Met Life (56 stories-no tower), and once on the WTC tower for a service call (there was nothing wrong, the problem was at the far end!).

I'm unashamed to say that I did it and I'm never going to do it again. It's not for the fainthearted.

Hunger is a great motivator! wink

And I always thought that the most dangerous job in telecom would be doing non pay disconnects in the "hood"

I had a friend who did repair for NY Tel in Bed-Stuy. He said he had pulled his truck in to a spot in front of the first repair and was getting his paperwork together when a Department of Sanitation garbage pail (full) came off the roof of the project and crashed through the windshield and landed in the passenger seat. After he brushed the glass off himself and checked himself out (no serious injuries, underwear still clean, etc.) he drove back to the garage (with the pail still in the windshield), walked in to the foreman's office and quit.
