Thinking about contacting Inter-Tel to explore becoming a dealer....how are they to deal with as far as initial training requirements, upfront tech/installer support and sales commitment levels? Any info would be appreciated.

Inter-Tel is excellent with tech support. Their training is stringent and they will not provide tech support unless you have certifications. And, the certifications are on individual components as well as the core system. But, their product is very complex so this is well deserved.
They are not ridiculously stringent on sales goals but overall I have had a better experience with them than any other vendor I have worked with including Avaya, Nortel, Iwatsu, and Samsung.
they are an extremely product knowledgable company and their inside sales reps are the best!!
