There actually is a spacesaver that does not contain a network - and yes, it's just a hookswitch and handset (and sometimes a dial)

[Linked Image from telephonearchive.com]

It uses a 4 conductor cord to connect back to the subset which contained the 101-A "network" induction coil, the condenser, and a ringer. Mostly the same parts as in a W/E 302 telephone.

Jim, where do you think half the stuff in garage came from! It was kid's 'stuff' stored in the basement. They followed us east from KS. Kinda like the proverbial 'bad penny'. frown

And to return the thread to the subject at hand, how about a list of 'space saver' model numbers with manufacturer. John C.

Gee, my dad is just waiting for the minute I move out. He is already threatening to liquidate my basement while I am at school smile

Despairing of ever being able to purchase a spacesaver at a $ I can afford, it appears that major pieces and parts are/were ( smile ) on E-bay at what I felt were reasonable prices. Sure would like to lay my hands on a rotary dial 'stalk' and dial mechanism CHEAP, but I suspect that's a pipe dream. Might see what I can do about designing (Cobbling up?) a 45 degree DTMF pad support to go on top. Then use a AE mini network and a 1A2 hi-voltage buzzer, unless I can locate a cheap 'tweeter'. Hey, I didn't say it would be legit, just useful. Wall mount Trimline would be more appropriate, let's face it. But the spacesaver is just too 'neat'. smile John C.

I remember helping a Business Office rep solve a problem for one of our customers back in the '70's.

He wanted a phone at his Bar in his home, but he wanted a speakerphone to go with it as well.

The solution was a 2212 (Touch Tone version of the 212) and a speaker phone. A Trimline wouldn't cut it 'cause of the speakerphone leads required.

Had to drag this back up. I am now the proud owner of 2 Spacesaver boxes, without handsets dials or anything else. So,I go cruising on E-bay, and lo and behold, I'm now the proud owner of WE and AE spacesavers with dials, complete, nice condition and they work! $100.00 total, inc. shipping! I don't know what happened, they usually close at $60+ EACH. Anybody want to buy a couple of WE Spacesaver body castings with hookswitch assemblies. 1 mounting bracket goes with the 1st one sold. I can probably be convinced to throw in an AE mini-network with each one. smile

Oh, and Jim, things are looking up. 1/3 of the garage floor is now visible, AND There is no risk of a huge stack of "STUFF" falling on you as you walk by. Woo-Hoo! smile John C.

Another example of eBay coming through just when needed. Limitless possibilities, that place!
