Way back in 2nd or 3rd grade, a guy from "the telephone company" came to class to demonstrate some basic telephony. Maybe it was career day or something.... I don't recall.
His setup was 2 SLT's, plugged into a "box" (as I recall, it was pretty small, maybe 1' x 1' x 8").
Each phone had dial tone, and you could dial one phone from the other.
What sort of device would supply dial tone and allow for switching, in such a small configuration?

a telephone line simulator like this I've seen many different ones by other manufacturers over the years
