I want to split a voice cable into 2 RJ14s. My boss thinks we should run separate cables and not split anything. This is just a big fat waste of money in my opinion.
So, anyway, she wants me to find proof that splitting the voice does not decrease the integrity of the cable.

Do any of you have a Lucent Cabling guide? I know when they first came out with their CPE phone systems they had a cable standards guide that discussed splitting the voice cable into RJ11s or RJ14s. I really need to find this document. I also need a drawing of a cat5e voice cable split to 2 RJ14s.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated!!!

Splitting of voice cables is fairly common nowadays. On a typical voice cable you would use the blue and orange pairs for jack 1 and the green and brown pairs for jack 2. This works, provided you have a system that requires no more than 2 pairs to operate. Their really aren't any problems with doing this provided that you are running voice equipment. I would never split Catagory 5 cable if you plan on using it for data, nor is it recommended to use the same cable to run voice and data accross the pairs. The unused pairs in data cable actually help insulate, so to speak, the other pairs from each other.

Who's paying the bill you or you boss?
Run a new drop you may need those spare pairs in the future if one goes bad.

As a rule you should home run a separate cable for each drop. But as Z-man has posted it is possible to split the voice if you want but if you have a bad pair down the road you will run into the problem that SSPhone mentioned. But never split your Network cables.
Now the choice is yours.

The other people that posted are correct. You would be better off spending the money and pulling another cable. However, if you just want to split the cable you will need to know the following information.

How many pairs does it take to run your phone?

Do you have the extra pairs to split?

If you have the extra pairs, do you have the knowledge to cross connect a dial tone to them in the phone room?

You can find the pinout for RJ11 and other info at this website (yes it's mine) www.phenomfx.com/pinouts

Good luck,
