I have a few endpoints on our site Intertel 5400 designated as Message Centres.

What does this mean?

It just means that particular extension is designated as a "message center" in the programming.

If you look at a station's Associated Extensions, you can see what is programmed for their Message Center. By default, it is set to NONE and I usually set it to be the voice mail pilot number if anything at all.

I've never found a great use for the message center personally. Maybe someone else can shed some light on it that finds it useful.

Message Center is actually pretty cool. It is basically a 'step call' feature. If a user has his Message Center set for the voicemail, then I can call him and press my Message key. After the Message Wait timer expires, I forward to the guy's mailbox. Works even on a handsfree call. It does not work on a transferred call though.
You could set a boss's Message Center to be his secretary. Call the boss, he doesn't answer, press yer message key and forward to his secretary.

Ditto on what Super says. I find it most usful when calling off-node - you don't really know who's in the office, so it's quick and dirty access to voice mail or the receptionist.
