Cancelled several outside lines with qwest (not set up on a t1 just had seven lines now down to three) now dialing 9 won't always get an outside line because it is still selecting the lines that no longer exist. System is Merlin I believe Legend based on features that work and the MLX- phones. I am thinking that setting the Auto Line selection to select the remaining lines will solve the issue, but I don't want to do something that isn't going to work and am not sure if there is something else that is a better solution.
++++++++++++++ That is the whole question everything below is only for those who care about a persons profile which I read in a forum that some of you do so if you don't save yourself the time and thank you for your help or if you do you can read on ++++++++++
I read that y'all check profiles before answering questions and I didn't fill mine out very well and didn't see where to update it after I read that so I will just include here. I used to be a fire alarm, and security/surveillance tech as well as built enterprise video surveillance servers and while the company I had (before the economy went to total *&%() and I had to get a job working for someone else) did phone systems and I have been to hundreds of BICSI events I have never really messed with them myself and they phone guy I had is on vacation and not reachable. So technically I am an end user now, but you don't have to make sure I pushed the power button just answer the question please and I can work it from there. There is no chance that not answering will get someone a service call it will just be a pain for me until my guy gets back and a poor phone guy having to deal with me live after hours. Thank you again.

OK I took the time to find and update profile and it doesn't appear that all of the info I gave was even necessary, but I have a teething 7 month old and am running on 30 minutes of sleep so please bear with me here. I truly appreciate any input on the above issue as well. Thank you.

Well if it is a merlin legend and it had seven lines plugged in they would all be the thin cords, not the fat cords and you could use your butt set with a single line adapter or just a single line phone to see which ones did or did not have dial tone.
Lines one to four would start on the left and more lines would work to the right.
Maybe the lines appear on the phone as buttons, line one, line two and line three, you could just press a button and call out, done.
If the lines don't appear as a button on the phone, and you have live dial tone on positions one, two and three on the legend, but dead air on positions four, then five, six and seven on the next three cords on the next card over, you could move one, two and three to five, six and seven and you should be able to dial 9 and call out.
Pur-dee simple moving wires.

Actually, since you dial 9 for outgoing calls, it has to do with the lines being assigned to the pool used for the ARS. It cycles through all of your lines in a circular order, so it will hit the working lines, then the dead lines, then circle back to the working lines again.
If you know the trunk numbers, and the pool number, you can take them out of the pool.
You can also go into Maintenance, and busy out the unused ones, then they will no longer be selected from the pool.

might be worth finding a new phone guy if calls to your business are important? this is just an inconvenience happening here but what if you were not receiving incoming calls??
tommy is dead on ..... remove the lines from the pool and that way callers dialing 9 will only end up on the live lines

that reference is to the guy who ran the phone division of the integration company I had previously he is not contracted to work for this company and would only have been giving an old co worker free information. if we had no incoming calls here and I couldn't figure it out we would have had a tech come out for that.

Triple "T" I actually followed your advice and ironically found a post from you on a different forum that went through the whole process and it worked well. (I stole the name Triple "T" from the other person you helped too). Thank you for your help. I appreciate it very much.
