i just bought a mod 564 northern telelcom, 5 line keyset. i dont have a ksu, so i removed the multi-pair cable with the amp connector, and connected a modular/spade tip line cord to L1 and L2 on the junction block under the dial. wired the bell, so it would ring, and can make and recieve calls, as long as line 1 button is depressed. how can i get the light for line 1 to work? all of the bulbs for the 5 lines work, i put 8 vdc across L1 thru L5, and the common ground, and the bulbs will light. how do i get L1 to light when i piok up the handset? i believe a hot lead needs to go to L1, and the get to ground thru a switch, right? is there a set of contacts in the hook switch for this? contacts for the L1 button? any help would be great! thanks...bob b.

Connect one side of your transformer (10vac is traditional, but 8v dc will work fine) to the green - white (lamp) lead. Connect the other side of the transformer to the orange- white wire. Connect the white-orange wire to the white-green (lamp ground) lead. When you go off hook, that should do it. It's a little cludgy, but it should work.

thanks! i had to connect a jumper from grey-slate (lead comming from hook switch) to lamp ground, and it worked, with the transformer connections you told me to do. prolly just alittle diff color scheme! this is my first time dealing with keysets. kind of like working on my old williams palooka pinball machine!(1964) alot of electro-mechcanical (EM) going on!!!

Why did you butcher the phone and take off the mounting cord with amphenol plug? You could have just plugged the cord into a mating 25-pair single-ended (stub) cable and derived all the features (such as lamps, ringer, and buzzer) that you want.

Sam, since he removed the cord, there is no white/green pair anymore.

well, i wasnt ever thinking of using the 564 other than home use. anyway, doing it your way would keep the phone original, but wouldnt it look more cobbed with wires being attached to the matched amp plug, then the way i did it? also, i took a pic of the of the twisted pairs, on the junction board of the phone before i removed them, so, yes, i could tell what pair went where. like i said, this is my first time working with a keyset phone. if i want to really do it right, next time ill find and purchase the whole shooting match, phone, ktu or ksu, and whatever i need. there are tons of old keysets out there!

Ah, removed the whole cord.......

I envisioned the amphenol removed.

The idea of removing the whole cable was probably too frightening to consider...

ya, i was thinking of removing just the amp connector, but i figured, if i just run a linecord for tip/ring, and a small cord for a transformer, it would look neater. this way, all the connections are made inside the phone. i realize that the phone lost its originallity, by removing the 25 pair cable, but, if i want to keep a keyset original, ill purchase another one....bob b.

No problem. What you did makes perfect sense, it just never occurred to me.
