Asterisk is an open source PBX software that runs on linux. My personal opnion about it is that it's strictly for people that have too much time on their hands and work somewhere where the phones are not important or you cannot lose your job from the constant downtime. I have been to a half dozen cutomers that are linux guru nutjobs and the last time they couldn't even get one damn printer up to print the floorplans. I mean I don't like windows either but, I don't think I want to spend countless, un-profitable hours trying to implement an all linux network that runs too fricken slow to be worth a crap. Just my 2 cents.

I know a lot of tech guys that love Linux and always brag about how powerful and reliable it is.

These guys also say they spend 98% of their time fixing the system and putting out fires,etc...

When downtime on a phone system for a few minutes can cost thousands of dollars such as in a financial institution with time sensitive stock trades, I would feel safer with a rock solid Samsung system which is build to have 99.99999% uptime rather then a box some I.T guys threw together.

Also, most of the cost is for the individual phones, TI and analog interface card,etc.. So basically you still have to spend a lot of money on hardware. I don't really think you are saving that much.

Maybe a few years in the future, the performance of the open PBX will outperform a regular phone system however right now I would rather not trust anything else to a bunch of crazy I.T guys.

Just my opinion.

Ever heard of PCBX. Came out 10 years ago. A PBX in a PC card. install the card, run the software on a DOS machine, hook up some analog phones and some lines and you had a full feature PBX. I bought one and played around with it. A great toy but not practical. It's DeJaVu all over again.
