I know this question or a form of it has come up before but bear with me: I know what the 760, 107, and 694 speakers are used for and what systems they are associated with. My question is they all seem to be superficially the same, with some having no volume control, etc. so could a 107 be used as a substitute for a 760, or a 694 used in place of a 107? Are there different speaker resistances, or voltage requirements? Could any be used as a simple speaker for a 1A2 intercom? Thanks in advance.

The answers are the same as the last time you asked, back in 2008:

https://sundance-communications.com...cs/485593/Re_speakers_and_speakerphones_

They are three totally different products. The only thing they have in common is the styling of the housing.

The 760 is just a speaker, used as the receive portion of the 3-type Speakerphone.

The 107 is called "The Spokesman" and is a self-contained amplified speaker unit that is used as an adjunct to a telephone to allow receive-only monitoring of the conversation. ITT called their clone of this product "The Orator"

The 694A and B Subscriber sets are used with the 2A Communication System. 694 contains a microphone, a speaker, and an amplifier,

The 107 can be used on a 401 manual intercom. Depress the line key and announce over the speaker. To work it on a dial intercom would require a little work with relays (dialing the particular code should cut tip and ring onto the speaker and then hold them there till the caller hangs up).

Thank you gents, especially silversam. Yes, I know I asked a similar question before and you answered it again, but my question this time relates to the characteristics of the different speakers. Silversam has said you can use a 107 with a 401 manual intercom: could a 694 be substituted as well? How about a 760?
Silversam must be a mindreader because that was actually the reason I posted this question: can you use other WE speakers with a 1A2 intercom system?

I don't know about the other units, because quite frankly, there was no need to try them. The 107 was very common (and very cheap).

As such, we often used a 107 as a mini paging speaker (boss-secretary etc.) it was a cheap, common app that we installed in those long ago times.

I would assume the 760 would NOT work, because it's not amplified.

The difficulty in answering your question is that you refer to all three devices as "speakers". We're trying to help, so if you are offended, it was unintentional.

Only one (the 760) is a speaker. The others are not speakers, and trying to use them for unintended applications might result in damage, and definitely will result in disappointment.

The amplifier and speaker combo, the "Spokesman" can be used, as Sam said, as a one-way voice announcing device, if connected across the T & R of a manual or dial-select intercom. You can either switch its power supply or its voice pair input.

The Interphone unit can only be used in conjunction with other compatible parts, most of which, if even available, are expensive and made of UNobtainium.

If you have an application in mind, tell us what you want to do, and we'll tell you what to use, and how to find out the wiring schemes. Learning what the different devices are and what they do is best done by studying the BSP's, most of which can be found on-line.

In my non-Bell checkered past, I worked in 17A1, Valcom, ITT and Stromberg-Carlson. Our paging speakers were either 70 volt for external, 25 volts in the K-Mart for I don't know what reason, and 45 ohm talkback speakers for the Valcom system. Yeah, we had on occasional 800? speakerphone (GTE style with rocker switch) and the 107 Orator, but for the most part, they were self-contained talkback in the 17A, or part of the xxxRTHF Valcom.

While I don't want to part with the RTHF models, a few bucks would get you some of the one-way paging boxes for anyone who wants to play with it. I would guess I have about 10 or more pieces of dial intercoms, including a Melco KL-19A (2 path) and I'll be liquidating those items by the end of June.

Thank you all for your comments. And please forgive my ignorance, I thought the 107, 760 and 694 were all considered speakers even though I realize some had added perks. I guess what I am looking for is not an intercom, but more of a paging system, where I could depress, say, key #5 on my 2565, and tell someone to pick up line 1, etc. It sounds as if the 107 would still be the best choice since the 760 is not amplified - it might not be loud enough to hear if used for a pager function. Another aspect: are the ohm ratings the same for all 3 of these devices? Would they all work via a 401 line card?

I don't know. I don't have these units to test them, and as I said before - it was not something I/we ever tried - because the 107 worked so well.

The only other unit I ever used off of a 401 card is the external speaker unit off of am ITT 76A Call Announcer system (very similar, I believe, to a GTE 17A system). That unit (one of which is still working in my house) provides Handsfree talkback when accessed via the manual intercom. (I use it as front door box).

You don't really need to know what "the ohms rating" is, because all three devices are entirely different, have entirely different circuitry and are used in entirely different applications.

You should use the one that the experts and the BSP recommends, because that's the one that is designed to do what you want to do. It is the Spokesman, which is exactly designed for your application.

A plain speaker will not work. A 694 will not work because it requires a special control unit.
