How will open CCS applications affect automated backup of CCS server databases?

We want to institute automatic backup of the CCS server database files. A number of our users leave CCS applications open 24/7. I am one of those people. I use Autoreporter within Reporter to generate reports nightly after our Call Centers close. Reporter is a historical program and not constantly accessing information. However, Reporter Realtime, Realviewer and Callviewer are in constant communication with the databases. These are all real time monitoring applications. Is it necessary for all users to close these applications in order to conduct a backup?

I use a scheduled task to XCopy the Avdap folder on the voicemail server. We've never had an issue. Of course there is no one using the phones at midnight on Friday.

There are some options, but I can tell you that when it comes to back ups, it's best not to cut corners. That's like paying a slightly discounted rate on insurance premiums for years and years to an offshore insurance company who decides not to pay when you have a claim.

We use a name brand back up software and pay the extra add on for the open file option. I think it's well worth it. PM me if you want the name and a dealer referral.

I couldn't agree with you more. We use Veritas 10. The issue is not with the backup. It's how to assure no corruption of the files during the transfer. Microsoft Access really doesn't like anyone fooling with its files. Especially if a file is open. We will ask all CCS users to close their applications each day. But you know the human factor in the equation is always the wild card. There are software packages that will either suspend or kill connections, but they don't always work. Our standard backup scenario is to take a snapshot of the files and copy them to a folder designated for backups. Veritas then backups the files from that folder. This keeps the backup function of Veritas, which can linger, from affecting the function of the system using the files. Our concern is what happens to the open files when we take the snapshot.

I try not to post brand names but that is what we're using. In fact I just got a memo that it's time to renew our agreement. The only difference is that we also run the "Open File Option" which will back up the open files as well.

Yeah, we have that as well. We're still gun shy when it comes to Microsoft Access.

Have you had the "opportunity" to test restoring the CCS databases? Are the databases viewed as corrupted by CCS? I'm a big proponent of learning from other's misfortunes.

I have restored many MS Access databases using it, but I have never restored the CCS databases.

One easy way to find out.

Keep in mind that the CCS Server does an auto archive of the DB at 12AM every evening. If you make sure and perform the backup after this time frame and only backup the archived folders not the HADAY or HCDAY then you should be okay. Keep in mind that this would assume that the users only have real-time open or reporter without any reports open so that auto reporter can run.

This is me kicking myself. The backup files have the .src extension correct? I had to use one of those files during a restore. All I had to do was change the extension back to .mdb.

THANK YOU!

Oh well, so much for a good idea. The CCS manual tells you which files to backup, they just don't give you any warnings about the repercussions of backing up an open file. We already backup the entire Avdap folder on the voicemail server. Which files should be backed up on the call processor server?
