The Harris Butt set I have doesn't have the piercing pin, but does have the bed of nails.

I with you and have no idea what you would use the piercing pin for these days

Huh, Learn something new every day! Any source to verify this?

I have a source to verify it. His name is Art Bloom. I could list some of his experience and qualifications here, but extremely long posts are discouraged on this forum.

puttsy, everything you ever wanted to know about butt set cords can be found here:

some line cords used to be made of the same tinsel material only plastic coated vs cloth (they may still be I haven't had to strip one out in awhile)

The piercing pins on mine get a lot of use. I often use them do clip on to beanies. There is still a lot of solid drop wire out there, and I encounter it quite a lot in my travels.

I agree about E-Bay as a good source for the cord sets. I bought a lifetime supply of them a few years back for less than the cost of one.

Mike Sandman has the following st his site:

Butt-Set Snap Hook: $8.50
Comes with 2 screws. Fits just about any set with this style clip, or use screws to mount to a toner or anything!

Butt-Set Cordset with Clip & Boots: $29.95
The Cordset (without clips) with spade lugs on each end, available for: $17.95

Bent Nose Clip with Bed of Nails & Spike: $5.95

You need to watch cheap test lead cords. Many are made with just stranded copper wire and not tinsel. The tinsel is a bear to terminate, but, if cared for, will last a long, long time.

If testing in a dry, uncrowded cable location, the bed of nails will work. Don't believe the claim of "self healing" insulation as that doesn't work. You will find this out the hard way if your cable gets wet.

Buy old rotary test sets on eBay in the $5-$10 range.

Great way to get sets of leads -- including frame clips, not just bed of nails.

msa, that is an excellent suggestion.

Here is an earlier thread that expands on this in excruciating detail:
