im just wondering what the benefit of changing the codecs on a 7200s? currently i have a 7200s v4.46d running 6-8 remote IP phones over a MPLS network to the romote sites. currently the codec is set G.711. they work, i just want to know if i should change it to G.729, G729a, or G.723. im asking b/c the TW telecom tech support made a comment regarding this codec, but since im just just a telephone man trap in an IT world im not really sure. thanks

The only benefit would be a decrease in bandwidth. The G.711 codec has the least compression, so it uses the most bandwidth, about 100k a side per conversation. The G.729 uses considerably less bandwidth with more compression, but at the cost of call quality. It depends on what your customer can live with. I'd choose between these two codecs and forget about the other two.

TWC uses the G.729 codec alot to save bandwidth. If you're not experiencing any problems with voice quality or network slowness, I'd leave it at 711

We use G.711 for all of ours. It's kind of considered a fax grade codec but the call quality is near perfect. I can hear a G.729 and it sounds VoIP'ish. G.711 sounds like solid digital.

If they don't have the bandwidth to do better than G.729 then in my opinion: they have no business running VoIP.

I'm starting to configure mine now for G.722 which they're calling HD (high definition) voice. They say it's even better than uncompressed direct digital phones. Other than not having a noticeable issue, it seems fine. I haven't seen a SIP carrier yet that will support G.722. It's my concern that if I have the phone set to G.722 and they don't recognize it that they drop to their default of G.729. I prefer not to run at G.729 at all because it can be Walkie-Talkie'ish call quality.
