We are running emagen v10.3.15, with a hard drive that was manufactured in 2004. I'd like to replace the drive before it dies.

Can the existing drive be removed, copied using a program like dd, and the new drive simply reinserted? Or are there some other things to look out for.

Thanks
Greg

If anyone is interested I went ahead with this and it worked like a charm, no config changes required, just a straight forward: image the hardrive and replace with the new one.

i used the unix command dd. do a web search on "clone disk dd" for options.

i suggest buying two hard drive enclosures that will fit the ide mobile drives.

1. download and burn a linux boot cd.
2. insert both drives into the enclosures and plug the enclosures with their usb cables into your computer.
3. boot off the linux disk
4. run the dd command accordingly. ( it depends which drive is mouted where)
should take less than an hour.

be sure that your new drive is larger than the previous. ( if you get the same size it may actually be smaller as different models/manufacturers can hold less actaul data, its to do with number/size if cyclinders - same extact size/model will be fine)

Since it is become much harder to find 40G hard drives Telrad Repair have begun using solid state drives/compact flash drives.

for the newer systems that have sata thats no problem. or are there ide ssd that i'm not aware of. (or do use an adapter)

the size shouldn't matter it could be a terabyte as long as its larger than the orginal.
