Changing the port settings on the usb device did no good either. I changed it to COM1 which was not in use on device manager however when I tried using COM1 in VMMI it told me the port did not exist or was already in use. Given that it connects in Putty, I'm beginning to believe that the problem is win8. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of keeping a box with an older operating system.

Ahaa. A DXP+ dinosaur. You'll have 1 TTY port and modem port by default. 9600 or 1200 Baud. If you have additional 4 port comm ports they could be programmed as any Baud. Dip switches also had a bearing. Hope you have a manual.

Got it!!! Problem was faulty wiring. In my infinite wisdom decided a ling time ago to cross-connect the COM port of the DXP all the way up to my office wall jack so I didn't have to trek to the box every time I needed to make a change on an extension or whatnot. Apparently I had a bad connection at some point which didn't flake out on WinXP and an actual serial port but did make a difference using a USB adapter. End result is a working USB to serial adapter on a Win8 box. Thanks for the help guys. My last resort was going to be connecting the modem and dialing in.

Are you able to connect with a terminal app (like TeraTerm)?

I have had 2 FX2 work for awhile using VMMI and all of a sudden they will not connect any longer. Only common denominators are USB and WIN 7. If I use XP and direct serial they work fine. Issue only occurs with VMMI. Putty is fine.

I would check your USB to serial adapter.
