I need to setup some SIP trunks for incoming and outgoing lines for my CIX100. I have a Sonicwall and some public IPs. My question is can I use a private IP for my MIPU and point sonicwall to the correct address? Does the MIPU require a public IP for SIP to function?

Generally the system will work better if the MIPU is using a public IP address. If the MIPU is on the internal network, then you would probabaly need a router that supports SIP ALG before it will work correctly.
It may depenend on the carrier. Sometimes the carrier's IAD could be a SIP proxy.

you can put the MIPU on public address, your distant ip phone will register to the MIPU public ip.
if ip phone is part of a network lan, behind firewall, create a VPN between two routers, and the ip phone will register to the MIPU LOCAL ip address.
it work very well.
