Im thinking you are asking about the expander key that goes on the main voicemail card ?It looks like a battery but isn't.It is required on the SVMI 4 in the 50Si and the OS100.

What appears to be a battery holder is on the board of the 50Si Flash Mail and located just above the small interface connector. It's marked NEG on the base and + on the clip. So, this is not for a battery? The next question is its compatibility with a Prostar DCS Compact 'as is' and what slot does the voice mail reside in the KSU. All three are available.

I know it appears to be a battery but it's called an upgrade key.
In a DCS Compact it can go in any slot as long as the software is above 2.5 In a compact it expands the SVMi from 2 to 4 ports and from 16-32 mailboxes. It is not required in a DCS Compact but is mandatory in a 50Si or 100 system.

Thanks for your reply you have been very helpful. The phone system says VER V2.1 when I connect a telephone. How does this impact my project?

That 2.1 is the firmware version of the telephone. You need to see the software version of the sysstem. If you open the cabinet up look towards the bottom right. There should be hopefully 4 eprom chips with a software version listed on them.Or if you can access programming it's mmc 727 that will give you version number.
