What is the preferred method to separate the clam shells of the hand set? It is for a 550.4400 phone. I have one with a bad speaker and one with bad plastic I would like to combine into one that looks good and works.

I've never heard of taking them apart, you'd be better off just replacing it...

I can't speak to this particular handset but I have taken many, many handsets apart to repair and do just what waterboy wants to do. The trick I use is to remove the screws then hold one end like a hammer with the side of the handset toward a carpeted floor and bang it hard, I mean hard on the carpet. They usually pop right open without breaking the tabs. Then they will snap nicely back together. Try it with an old handset first to get a feel for it. Also sometimes you can put one end on a soft surface with the other end up and push down like you were trying to bend it in the middle and it might pop open.
