I am having a problem that is driving me nuts..of course that may be a walk for me. My Asus Netbook runs on Win XP home premium. I can no longer disable either NIC using Network Connections. You know that little word that is listed when you right click on a network connection. I used to use it a lot to disable the wifi so that I could connect thru the wired adapter to an SBX or other phone system. Now when I try that I get an error saying it cannot be done at this time because it is using one or more protocols and some stuff about not supporting plug and play..blah, blah, blah. After searching the web for a solution, I have discovered that this problem has been around for sometime, but so far I have not found a solution. I am beginning to think that Microsoft broke this for me because the only thing new installed is a ton of their irritating updates.
I can still disable nic adapters using device manager...but what a pain when I am in a hurry to do so.
Anybody got any bright ideas as to how to fix this without upgrading to WinX which may not work with all my old Vodavi com software?

Which model Asus netbook? I am assuming there is no Fx key to toggle wifi on and off? There is, but turning off the wifi is not the same as disabling it. Not quite anyway, not since this error started. Using the F key to toggle it off used to disable it, now its ability to receive a signal is off, but I get a can't connect to a network error because the adapter still tries to operate and there is nothing to tell you its off, you have to remember to toggle it again...it is a real pain, let me tell you.

You can disable it using a command prompt with command netsh. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ine/17a21634-c5dd-4038-bc0a-d739209f5081With that you can make a batch file to enable and another to disable then place shortcuts on the desktop. On my bench machine, I have about a dozen setups that change the NIC to different IPs and netmasks so I can easily work on access points without having to type it all in.

I'd try reloading the TCP/IP Stack: Start -> Run -> cmd netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357Another step would be to uninstall both of your NICs and reboot. (download the updated drivers FIRST for both NICs just in case) Then let Windows reinstall them.

I'll give it a try. I did re-install the wifi adapter. I should do the same thing for the wired.

Reloading the ip stack didn't fix this issue. I think it has something to do with net framework but I am not sure.

I googled using the exact wordage of the error and lo and behold I found a fix!!!!
"While in SAFE MODE Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then OK. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line: net stop cryptsvc ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2 Reboot
