I have a customer interested in a vanity number for their operation.

The only time i remember dealing with this was back in the Verizon days when they called them Gold numbers or something and charged $5 per month extra .. forever.

With all of the CLECs has anything changed??

You can always call a rep at any LEC or CLEC and request good numbers. Verizon used to charge extra for this, but it appears that they have dropped that and just let you try a pick at the number you want.

Keep in mind that local exchange codes are now sold by the block of 1,000 numbers to the carrier, not the full 10,000 that it used to be. This means that up to ten different service providers can share the same code.

For example, the 548 code here is shared by Verizon and AT&T local. AT&T has the 5000 block. If a potential Verizon customer wants to get 548-5500, they would have to get that number away from AT&T. Verizon can't just give away numbers that don't belong to them. It gets ugly. Couple that with the fact that many of these exchange codes are also shared with cellular providers and you have a true to life show.

Frankly, it is a lot easier to get vanity numbers from toll-free providers. Ring Central will actually let you search numbers on-line and reserve them. With the new 844 and 855 area codes, there are quite a few good numbers still available to be had.
