No, it is not really what we know as a ring generator. It is a device that re-rings the call on a per-line basis back into the phone system. Viking's terminology is bad on this one.

Reading the PDF for the TMS-6, it appears that the unit is to be placed near earshot of the receptionist so the receptionist can hear the "tone" that the unit generates on a sequenced call. If it is desired to have the PBX or Key System alert the attendant or common bell, a ring generator must be used.

The SQRG-12 receives data from the TMS-6 to re-ring lines with ring voltage. If you can figure out what pins are used for data and which are used for ring voltage, you may be able to use a 1A2 power supply with ring gen.

In the "Old" days, we installed sequencers that just required a ring gen and the little relays in the device would re-ring the CO line ports in the PBX after a timing sequence would trip.

Sort of. The TMS-6 is designed to be a desktop unit that has an LED display to show the line to pick up that has been in queue the longest. This unit really isn't designed to work on any system other than a key system with square line appearances. When "4" shows up on the display and the unit sounds an audible ring tone, you simply grab the line that has been on hold the longest, AKA line 4. The line key is dark since it really isn't present on the phone system; it is being held by the TMS-6 ahead of the system.

Viking also makes a remote queue monitor display (with audible ring) that works behind the TMS-6 so that more than one answering position can have this information.

It really is a cheesy way to provide ACD, but in Viking's defense, this unit was designed as a poor man's ACD back in the early 90s when every phone system didn't offer some form of ACD/UCD or other types of call queuing out of the box. That has pretty much changed now.

The SQRG-12 takes the data that illuminates the LED display and translates it to ring that particular line back into the key system as a new incoming call. With this, the TMS-6 can be located in a closet somewhere since the display isn't necessary; you just grab the incoming calls as the SQRG delivers them. It is really quite a sophisticated device and NO, you're not going to piece something together using a 1A2 frequency generator (ring generator) to do this.

They used to have a six-line ring generator unit that matched the TMS-6, but when they came out with the twelve-line version of the call sequencer (TMS-12), they eliminated it and standardized with the 12-line ring generator. That's part of the reason why it is so expensive: You're paying for a unit that supports twelve lines, yet the TMS-6 only handles six lines.
