Thanks for the photos! An intercom on one or more of the spare lines would be a fun touch. That would mean more CAT5 cables, though.

Not really. Split/shared grounds are your friend on 1A2. According to my count, there should be 1.5 pairs available that could be used for intercom tip, ring and lamp. If a local ground could be obtained, even a buzzer could be accommodated to provide a full line appearance and intercom. Metal studs work wonders in these situations (hint).

Professor Shadow: Yes it is! There are two of them! I guess it's supposed to be some form of either surge protection or an extension of some kind? Both of the lamps in here have them. The other one is out of view.
