Dexman is correct in checking local building codes. In Oregon the backboard needs to be fire retardant. If it is painted then a fire retardant paint needs to be used. We ALWAYS keep the retardant stamp unpainted so the inspector cannot question afterwards.

There is NO code section in the NFPA 70 regarding telecom backboards. However, there are some Universal Building Code references to "fire retardant" plywood and "fire retardant" paint. It all depends on your local AHJ and which building codes are being enforced. Here's a good read regarding this issue: Click Here

My local lumber yard has always carried fire retardant grey paint. It's a little pricey, but a nice install deserves a classy backboard.

I did many things while taking leave during my navy career and work was not one of them! Fortunately, she who must be obeyed roped a then young sailor. I'm sure that grandpa is rightfully proud.

My family friend whose a Chief calls his wife the "event coordinator." It seems everyone has their own endearing moniker! wink

Thanks for all the support and comments, everyone. This will be the first of many installs for years to come.
