In Western PA, Verizon owns poles as does the power companies. The situation that gets me is joint owned poles with each utility claiming 100% ownership. Try and get someone to respond to a situation as Arthur described and all you hear is "Your wait time is now 34 minutes."
Here, Verizon will go out of their way to install FiOS to avoid repairing or installing new copper. It's a real comedy show to see a fiber tech (yeah, we have fiber techs here) try and manage a trouble call on copper.

Just dropping by giving my props for Pink Floyd.
They just don't make music like that anymore no matter who the artists might be.
In regards to poles, I had pretty good response times from Ohio Edison Co. I guess electricity can do more damage and electric company does not want to end up on the short end of the stick, is one way to look at it.

To make a long story short:
Almost 20 years ago I hung myself on a power line, riding a dirtbike, that had fallen off of a cross buck that had apprently been down for some time because there were a half dozen dead deer lying on the ground right next to me when I woke up. 12,500 volts knocked out the power to several rural villages by the time I had gotten to the hospital (45) there was already a rep from the power company at the ER waiting for me and he wanted to find out where it was!!! Needless to say the pole and all cross bucks were replaced that night as my Dad had tried to go back up to the scene to see if he could find a few lost items of mine and they wouldn't let him near it as they were replacing. All happened in a matter of a couple of hours.
I called about six months ago about a VZ pole in a rural area where my family camp is at that had a tree fall on the line and the top of the pole broke off letting the wire dangle between two poles and they just finally got it repaired!!
