I am wondering what the fascination of programming a small key system with a laptop is....
I can understand a pbx....thats self-explanatory......but come on guys.......a small 6 line key system........does the feeling of hooking up to a serial port get you in a tizzy.......
I wont name a certain phone system I deal with but basically when you power it up all you really have to do is change ringing assignments and thats it........
Does the impression of connecting to a phone system with a laptop impress the girls in the office......does it give you power.......what is it........
PICK up the friggin manual and use yer noodle and read..........

I whip the laptop out when I want to impress the ladies.
Its much more impressing to be typing on a laptop then clicking buttons on a little phone.
Just joking.

The only system that ONLY program via the phone is ESI. I mean, it's so easy and quick.

I would love to only program by the phone. Pulling out my laptop slows me down and hurts my shoulder. The worst is when you leave you power supply at the last place you worked at and have to drive back to get it. Only for an easy mac order of changing which phone rings on incomin calls.

I feel your pain!
In most cases, it takes longer for the thing to boot up than it does to fat-finger it!
Still, there are obviously reasons to use a laptop, like for backups, etc., but seriously, I think it's more impressive for the customer see you assess their needs, punch a few (or many) buttons, and leave them satisfied as quickly as you can. They usually appreciate the minimal disruption and really don't mind paying for a minimum service call, regardless of how little time it takes.
I personally avoid using the laptop as much as possible; it's just one more thing to lug around.
Man, we are getting lazy, but then many of us are probably getting old too. That makes getting lazy OK. At least we are gainfully employed!

Well, if you only need to hook up to a serial port, or run DOS SPM for Legend/Magix, here's what you want: https://www.the-gadgeteer.com/hp200lx.html

On the other hand, some customers would rather have you walk quietly to the closet and stay out of sight for a while than interfere with their phone use.

Hey, Junkman, that must be the same place where I went for some CPAs. You couldn't even walk down the main hallway unless you were in a suit ![[Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]](https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/frown.gif) little alone mess with the main phone in the lobby. Went to the service entrance, did my thing, and left. Two months later my parent company bought them out and I was in charge of the area --- walked all over in jeans!!! Love it when it all comes together. ![[Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]](https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/wink.gif)

I sometimes program with a phone but I prefer the laptop for a couple of reasons. 1) Like Junkman said, I prefer to stay out of site in the phone closet. 2) I believe in backing up everything you can. When the system gets fried by lightning (or whatever) it's a lot easier to get the customer back up if you have the most recent backup. You said, "PICK up the friggin manual and use yer noodle and read.......... " Well, the manual is on the laptop because they don't send paper manuals any more! ------------------ North Florida Communications
