I agree, to some extent. I doubt that there is a conspiracy by the copper companies to bring out a new category just to keep copper alive. That source is the IEEE and ANSI/TIA/EIA.

I do fully agree that, if the industry would move everything to fiber, the cost would come down to a reasonable level and all the category nonsense would go away.

By the way....the decline of the telephone business may be short lived. Has anyone been following the FCC and their motions to regulate the net as well as imposing user fees for telecom services over the internet? Comcast, AT&T and some others are already data capping. I can't wait for those VoIP people to get their ISP bills in the thousands of dollars for over cap usage. It's coming. Look for the "Net Neutrality" wars to heat up soon. Does ANYONE really think the government can keep their hands out of a potential trillion dollar "honeypot?"

Help? NEVER. But, the wild claims of VoIP companies and the idea that the "cloud" is a do all end all is going to have serious consequences to those that drank the Kool-Aid and tossed their wired systems and gleefully think they are free and clear.

I heard complaints that the byte brothers allow you to change the output readings in a excell spread sheet. I used the Agilent Wire-scope 350 pro but not sure if newer ones will test 1Gig Cable.

We have a Fluke DSX-5000 and a JDSU NT-955. They both provide the exact same results. If a tester provides BERT testing, skew rate, crosstalk and distance to fault, it pretty much is certifying the cable. I know, some people will jump all over that comment, but, I have tested several cable certifiers and they all do the same tests and provide tracable results.

We also have a sweep generator and an oscilloscope and I can find the faults in ANY cable certifier that they miss. So...on average, if your tester is providing tracable results, use it.

I just purchased a T3 Innovations NC-950 AR network tester and cable certifier. I think it's really cool. I have been comparison testing for a few days and this thing is slick. Has anyone else had any experience with it?

Of course everyone can point to anomalies in any system, where a higher end unit may ultimately pass a problematic cable, but that may not necessarily be the fault of the unit as much as a environmental issue.

If a client is asking for certification and you are charging them for this work, then you better be using a certifier; plain and simple.

In fact many RFP, will request certification be done by a few qualifying products (Fluke DSX series being a standard)

We own multiple, of various brands, of cable "testers" as they work just fine. 99.99% of the time if they pass on these low end devices the cable works as it should for the customer.

The point being though, if a customer is requesting certification, you better be charging for this and give them what they want.

There are a ton of certifiers in the used market right now, so finding an affordable one shouldn't be an issue.
