Yes, you generally have to keep the firmware somewhat matched between phones and IPRC. The 1.5.x versions of IPRC matched more like the older IPCs, and you configured them by opening a web browser direct to the IPRC card. The 8.x versions tied the IPRC into the general system programming, subject to the software license loaded (probably on a CPC by 8.x) vs. the older PAL licenses on the IPRC v1.5 (probably around 5.x code on older CPU).
The firmware files should be available on any of the Axxess CDROM software disks. Ie. \FIRMWARE_FILES\IPRC or \FIRMWARE_FILES\8660 or \FIRMWARE_FILES\IPP+
The 8.1 vs. 8.2 code doesn't matter so much, but 8.1 vs. 1.5 will definitely be a no go.
Certain phones don't carry back too far, ie. the 8662's with all their different permutations probably never had 1.5 compatible firmware and certain ones aren't even compatible with 8.2. But the IPP+ and 8660 should if you can find say a 5.x AXXESS disc.

(Just remembered that for the 5.x era, there probably was also a IP Devices Firmware Disc that may be more relevant).
