You need the ds software the software doesn't run on win 7 and there is a known problem with it not connecting on some systems .connection instructions are on the website. You also will need a serial adapteqr, instructions for the pin outs are in the Manual

Thank you. i do have the DS Admin Software on an old XP machine i used way back when. i have a serial to usb adapter as well as the db9 connector. how does it plug into the nec ds2000? the manual says a din connector which i do not remember ever using.i know this is prior to the usb programming like the dsx.

It's a serial to 8 pin mod cable it plugs into the processer the hardware manual tells you how to make one. I use one I bought years ago the manual should have the NEC part number

Thank you skip. I seen that and the part number for that cable. the 1000's look like they use the serial db9 and a cable you can make that plugs into the unit with a modular end. while the 2000's uses the same serial db9 connector but uses a cable with a mod plug on one end going into the db9 and it plugs into the processor via the din connector on the other end NEC part 80893.
If i had one of those i got tired of carrying it around once everyone migrated to dsx series. And its not an easy part to find not even on ebay. What i am wanting to verify is that the only method of programming via pc is with the cable with the din connector plugged into the processor.

You are correct the DS-1000 used the Mod plug, while the DS-2000 used a PS/2 style connector to plug into the CPU. I am pretty sure that is the only way to program one via a PC.
