the cable is the only way and as I mentioned I've had several that wouldn't work with PC programming . The first time I ran into this the system was still supported by NEC and Tech support told me it was a known problem , and they wouldn't be addressing it .
What VM are you using ? you can go into the VM with the old interface and hyper-terminal I wouldn't recommend it unless you're familiar with it from the old TIE /Nitsuko Days

This was a known issue.
Some things have to be keyed in by phone.
System admin software is not 100 percent reliable when entering changes.
We get old too soon, smart too late
